Due to a string of injuries and suspensions, Doherty should feature for his new club for the first time this weekend.
Argentine World Cup winning right-back Nahuel Molina has been Diego Simeone's first choice this season, but a booking picked up at against Real Madrid last weekend means he is suspended for this week's clash with Sevilla.
On the left side of defence, Reinildo Mandava is out for the season and Sergio Reguillon is a doubt having picked up a knock in training, paving the way for Doherty to fill in at left-back as he has done on occasion for Ireland.
A return to action would be a much welcomed boos for Ireland manager Stephen Kenny, whose side kick off their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign at home to World Cup finalists France on March 27.
