Hollywood star Matt Damon has said making Sir Christopher Nolan’s upcoming The Odyssey felt “more like an expedition than a film”.
The 55-year-old stars in the upcoming blockbuster adaptation of the Homer epic as Odysseus, the Greek hero behind the Trojan Horse as he makes his 10-year journey home from war.
Speaking to People magazine, Damon opened up about the collaborative effort that went into making the highly anticipated film – which will be released next month.
Damon said: “Every single day of filming that movie stands out because it felt more like an expedition than a film.
“It was so difficult to get the shots that we got, the way that we got them, that it really required every single person on that cast and crew to just completely max out day after day after day.
“I came away from that experience just feeling really lucky and grateful that I got to be a part of a team like that, because it never could have worked if everybody hadn’t completely just pushed themselves beyond what they thought they could do.”
He said he is “really excited” for the public to see the film, adding: “It’s worth their money for what it took for us to make it.
“You’ll be getting your money’s worth.”
Damon also reflected on working with Oscar-winning filmmaker Sir Christopher, who is widely hailed as one of the most respected and influential directors in Hollywood.
They have previously worked together, and Damon had supporting roles in his 2014 space film Interstellar and 2023’s Oppenheimer.
He told the magazine: “There was no special treatment.
“If you’re out on a boat in the middle of the ocean and you get caught in a storm, you get wet with everybody else.
“Everybody’s on equal footing, including Chris, who was just as cold and wet as everybody else throughout the whole thing.”
Damon added: “That made it feel like we were really all in it together, because we were.
“I do feel really bonded with everybody who was on that movie, cast and crew, because it was so challenging for everyone.”
Damon is best known for his breakthrough role in Good Will Hunting (1997), which he co-wrote with his friend and fellow actor Ben Affleck – who also starred in the film.
The Oscar-winner has also starred in blockbusters including The Martian (2015) and The Departed (2006), as well as the action-packed Jason Bourne franchise.
