Matt Cooper 'healthier' after quitting Virgin Media's Tonight Show as he hints at TV return

Matt Cooper said he has no regrets leaving his Virgin Media show behind admitting he is now much healthier for it.

The busy broadcaster quit The Tonight Show last August after the late night’s started to take a toll on his health and well being.

Asked if he has any regrets watching the show go on without him since, with new presenters Claire Brock and Ciara Doherty, he told Irish Mirror: “No, I really don’t.

“And in fact there are lots of times I come home and feel how grateful I am actually.

“I probably am a lot healthier to be honest,” he added.

The radio presenter, who host’s Today FMs drivetime show The Last Word five days per week, said he struggled to juggle the workload in the end.

He went on: “I think I kind of realised belatedly that it was a bit too much.”

But the journalist said he could make a return to TV screens in the future.

“I mean, I won’t rule myself out from doing other things in the future and stuff, but I want to do it on a manageable time basis,” he said.

“And there may be potential for things. I mean like there are certain things I am looking at at the moment but they can be done at a more manageable time basis so I can sort of do them in the mornings instead of working late at night.

“Because my problem was, and it probably did impact on my health, but when you come home from late night television you are wide awake.

“The adrenaline is at you and you end up being up until 2am in the morning and that isn’t good for anybody when you are getting up at 7am, especially as you get a bit older.”

Speaking on the red carpet on Tuesday night at the premiere of Gabriel Byrne’s show Walking With Ghosts, which he attended with his daughter, the fresh-faced star said he feels better rested and liberated to have social life again in the evenings.

He said: “I was juggling and it is even brilliant to be able to come out tonight and to go to something like this or watch a football match.

“Finishing work at 7pm each day has been a bit of a liberation to be honest.”
