Get ready for the return of a healthy dosage of Matilda fever, because Australia’s golden girls have just celebrated an “absolute banger” of a win against Germany in a match that will go down in history for more than one reason.
Playing against the German national women’s squad on their home turf at the city of Duisburg, the odds were against our beloved Matildas who are still bouncing back from their Paris Olympics stint and the loss of head coach Tony Gustavsson.
However, even after being one goal down for the majority of the first half, the Tillies’ “never say die” spirit came to play at minute 39 when Arsenal midfielder Kyra Cooney-Cross brought the score to a tie.
Thunder-punting the ball in from almost 40 metres away from the goals, the 22-year-old legend sent the ball soaring over the head of the German keeper, and right in the back of the net.
It was beautiful. It was glorious. I’m not even going to pretend to have any sense of reservedness you guys, this goal was DIVINE. Watch it right this second.

When I’m on my deathbed reliving my life’s greatest moments, you best believe this goal will be featuring.
Reflecting on her goal, Cooney-Cross said that she went for it after she saw her opponents “made a mistake”.
“I was going to leave it for Michelle [Heyman], but then I looked up and saw the keeper was off her line, so I had a shot,” she said.
What makes this goal even better is that it was Cooney-Cross’ first ever goal for the Matildas, AND it was in her 50th match playing for Australia’s national women’s squad.
Following this historic goal, the game stepped up a notch. And while things were even for a while, in the 79th minute Matildas’ midfielder Clare Hunt scored a beautiful header off a cross from captain Steph Catley. This was also Hunt’s first goal for the Tillies.

And with that, the Matildas secured a 2-1 victory against Germany, making it the first time they had beaten the squad in 19 years.
The last time the Matildas beat Germany was in 2005, which is also the only ever time we’ve beaten them.
Not to get ahead of myself but… IT’S COMING HOME!!!
Onya to all the fantastic Tillies. Massive congrats to Kyra Cooney-Cross and Clare Hunt for your iconic first goals.
God I love this game (when it is played by the Matildas).
