Mateo Kovacic, Marcos Alonso: Chelsea injury news and expected return dates vs Tottenham

Thomas Tuchel will be able to call upon almost his entire first team squad for their opening home fixture of the season as they face London rivals Tottenham hoping to make it two wins from two.

Chelsea beat Everton in their opening fixture 1-0 but will likely need to have an improved performance against a Spurs side who won 4-1 in their first game of the campaign against Southampton. Thomas Tuchel will have been happy to see the return of both Reece James and Ben Chilwell in his side's opening fixture, with both reported not to have been fully fit in the build-up.

Chilwell started for the first time since he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Juventus in November 2021 before being replaced in the 65th minute. Meanwhile, James managed to play 90 minutes despite Thomas Tuchel revealing that he was not fit in the build-up to the fixture.

With a clash against Antonio Conte's side on Sunday afternoon, Tuchel will be hoping to field his strongest possible side in order to lay down a marker for the rest of the season. Here's the latest Chelsea injury news.

Mateo Kovacic

Tuchel revealed in his pre-game press conference that Kovacic would be missing from the game against Spurs due to a knee injury, though it does not appear to be too serious a problem for the Croatia international.

What Tuchel said: "[Kovacic] has issues with his knee, always a little bit of a reaction. We decided to take a step back and increase treatment time to reduce the stress that comes from training to have a normal reaction before we start again. Everybody else is available."

Marcos Alonso

Alonso will not be in contention to face Tottenham as he seeks to complete a transfer to Barcelona. Tuchel confirmed the defender would be absent on Sunday and has not been in training ahead of a potential move.

What Tuchel said: "He is not in training at the moment and trying to finalise his transfer, so he will not be available for the game."

Reece James

The defender was struggling to be ready for the start of the season, but managed to start against Everton at Goodison Park and come through the clash unscathed.

Ben Chilwell

Like James, Chilwell was not nailed on to start against Everton, but managed 65 minutes on his return from an ACL injury. However, he will now be in competition with Marc Cucurella - though the £63million signing from Brighton can also play at left-centre-back and could start there against Spurs.
