Match of the Day host Gary Lineker compared to Piers Morgan in Qatar: "An all-time low"

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker suggested he could not “forgive” an error from an enthusiastic football fan after being mistaken for Piers Morgan.

The pair have developed somewhat of a rivalry over the past few years with their Twitter exchanges a regular feature of matchdays. They have been at the heart of a few arguments over recent years - the most recent being a discussion over whether Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi was better.

However, England icon Lineker got a little too close to comfort with Morgan over recent days having been approached by a supporter during a day off in Qatar. Whilst taking in Morocco’s quarter-final victory over Portugal, Lineker was approached by a keen-eyed football supporter - only to be left wishing he’d been left alone after he was mixed up with outspoken TV presenter Morgan.

In a video shared to the ex-England striker’s Twitter, the fan was asked who he thought Lineker looked like and replied: “Morgan. Piers Morgan.”

That was joined by the caption: “Oh god. An all-time low.”

The fan then took to his own Twitter account after his happy meeting with Lineker. Sharing an image of the pair, he wrote: “Unfortunately I thought he is Piers Morgan @GaryLineker it was a pleasure watching the match next to your table.”

Lineker then had a humorous response to his post. He replied: “I’ll forgive almost anything, but this…..”

Opticians Specsavers then had their say on the unfortunate gaffe as they replied to the fan with the simple message of: “Call us."

It remains to be seen if Lineker remained with the fan for the second quarter-final of the day as England squared off with France or made his way over to the Al Bayt Stadium instead for the Three Lions’ clash with the reigning world champions.

He still found time to hail Morocco for their performance against Portugal that saw them become the first-ever African side to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. The former England forward wrote: “Wow.

“Sensational victory for Morocco. Gutsy, spirited, organised, calm and deserved. The first African side to reach a World Cup semifinal. Well played. Well f**king played.”

The real Piers Morgan also gave his verdict on England’s quarter-final showdown with France ahead of the game. He shared an image of Les Bleus star Kylian Mbappe and appeared to suggest that he would be the difference between the two sides.

He wrote: “I want England to beat France on Saturday with every sinew of my being, but I'm getting an increasingly bad feeling that this guy's going to send us home.”
