Massive new artwork appears at Manchester Victoria station

A new huge piece of artwork has been installed in the passenger tunnel at Victoria train station. The yellow-lettered piece, which stretches more than 30 metres, features the words ‘I love MCR Victoria’ and is surrounded by illustrations of bees.

The new artwork was created by Mancunian artist Dez, also known as LoveArtPix, who is a creative artist, using his work to campaign to break the stigmas around mental illness and autism.

The yellow lettering against the black background is both striking and eye-catching, while the worker bee, a true symbol of Manchester, seems to symbolise the business of the station.

The new piece sits opposite a piece created by Dez earlier in the year. Titled #IconicManchester, the image of the Manchester skyline already brightened up the footbridge with images of Withy Grove Stores, The Printworks and the National Football Museum.

Now, more of Dez’s work can be enjoyed by commuters and rail passengers, speaking about his work in the station, Dez said: “Manchester is a cosmopolitan, international city and this side of the overbridge is the first thing you see when you get off the train and head up the stairs to exit the station into its heart. I want to thank Northern yet again for trusting my talent as an artist to create a unique image for our proud city.”

Speaking to Northern Rail earlier in the year, Dez explained how art has helped him with his own mental health, saying: “I use art as my own personal therapy and coping strategy. I believe that many other people with mental health issues and autism could also benefit from expressive art and I want to help promote this.

“This work at Manchester Victoria was easily my biggest project to date and I was really excited to get creating something that would bring some colour to the bridge. I hope the work creates a positive mood on the people using the station each day.”

Chris Jackson, regional director for Northern, who manages the station on behalf of Network Rail, said: “This amazing piece of art is a wonderful final addition to the passenger bridge interior and something I know our passengers will enjoy seeing as they travel through the station.”
