Massive global protests demand ceasefire in Gaza conflict

100th day since Hamas attacks in Israel.

Today marks the 100th day since the Hamas attacks in Israel claimed the lives of approximately 1,200 people. In Tel Aviv, thousands of people have gathered to commemorate this solemn occasion and to demand the release of hostages held in Gaza. Around the world, protesters are expressing their support for Palestinians in Gaza and calling on Israel to cease its bombardments.

According to the Hamas-controlled Palestinian Health Ministry, the death toll has exceeded 23,000 people, with 10,000 of them being children. As a demonstration of solidarity, a massive rally also took place in Washington, D.C., where participants called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. The demonstration comprised a march through the city and a protest outside the White House.

The magnitude and program of this protest resembled a previous massive march for Gaza in November, highlighting the urgency of the situation as the death toll continues to rise. The protesters sought to exert political pressure on the Biden administration to end its unwavering support for Israel and its military aid to Gaza.

During the rally, a Palestinian-American woman shared her personal experience, expressing her deep concern for her family members in Gaza, some of whom have lost their lives due to the conflict. She stated that while she had voted for President Biden in the 2020 election, she could not support him in the upcoming 2024 election due to what she perceives as his involvement in the 'genocide' of her people.

In response to growing calls for a ceasefire, the Biden administration recently stated that it is listening to and engaging with progressives. However, a Biden staffer participating in the ceasefire effort expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that the administration does not currently appear receptive and that further political pressure, such as the rally, is necessary.

Although the protest was overall peaceful, there was one incident of disturbance. Two individuals were arrested by the U.S. Park Police for disorderly conduct and assaulting a police officer, which remains under investigation.

As the conflict in the region persists, the international community continues to grapple with the complexities and seek viable solutions to ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected.
