There has been a massive seizure of illegal tobacco and cigarettes worth €4.5 million at Dublin Port.
The huge find was made last Friday during routine scanning operations at the busy sea port. Using Revenue's x-ray mobile scanner there was 6,000kg of roll your own tobacco and 2,400 cigarettes found in a shipment.
The smuggled tobacco and cigarettes, of multiple brands, have an estimated retail value of over €4.5 million, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of almost €3.5 million. It was discovered in a consignment marked as ‘PVC Resin Floor Sealer’ which originated in Belgium and had arrived in an unaccompanied trailer via Zeebrugge.

And on Monday another significant find was made with the help of the scanner and detector dog Milo. Officers seized 12.3kg of roll your own tobacco that was branded ‘Golden Virginia’ and ‘Sopianie’ and has an estimated retail value of over €9,300.
A package destined for Dublin and Louth was also found today in a premises in Athlone. Officers checking packages found over 17.9kgs of herbal cannabis worth almost €359,000. The packages had originated in Spain and Italy.
