'Massive crash noise' as tree collapses onto roof of house in Mapperley

A couple have spoken of their "near miss" after a tree collapsed onto their home in Mapperley.

Yulin Kinnear, 43, was working from home when she heard a "massive crash noise" and discovered that the tree outside their home had punched a hole in their roof at around 3pm on Friday, February 18.

Yulin's husband, Paul Kinnear, who was teaching at Nottingham Trent University when the incident happened, has said that he thinks the pair got off lightly.

Fortunately the tree only caused some damage to the roof in the middle-part of the property in Lees Road, Mapperley, but Yulin had been working in a room next to where the tree had fallen.

Clean-up crews from Mansfield were on hand later that evening at around 8pm to clear the tree and any debris that had fallen.

Paul, 53, who works product design lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, recalled the moment he arrived back from work to see what had happened.

He said: "Well, I teach at the university in town but my wife works from home and at around about 3pm obviously there was a big crash, bang, wallop and she found a tree in our house!

"As you can see I think we got away a bit lightly actually because it's a big tree.

"We had the crew out at around about 8pm.

"They were brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

"In terms of near misses, I think it was a really close one because I'm guessing that the wind came from in between the houses and obviously the tree collapsed.

"I think if it had gone on the side where my wife works it could've been a different story.

"But as it was I think it sorted of teetered over and the angle of the tree in relation to the roof wasn't too bad.

"I think we got away with it lightly.

"Ironically I was talking to my students telling them to be careful about not being hit by debris or falling trees from the lecture I was giving and came home and found a tree at my house."

This incident comes after numerous reports of trees that have been uprooted throughout Nottinghamshire following the devastating effects of Storm Eunice, which ripped through the county on Friday.

Paul has said that the couple, thankfully, are insured.

Yulin, who is a graphic designer, said: "Basically I just heard a massive crash noise and I came to the landing and there was just a massive hole in the landing.

"It could've been worse, though."
