Mason Mount looks set for a crucial summer regarding his footballing future amid a contract standoff with Chelsea and transfer interest from several Premier League clubs. The 24-year-old has 18 months left on his current deal and initial talks over an extension were set to begin prior to the World Cup.
However, negotiations quickly took a hit with Mount and the club far apart regarding their demands. Having seen Reece James and Armando Broja sign new lucrative deals, Mount was hopeful of a similar wage package, but Chelsea, under the Todd Boehly regime, no longer operate that way.
Instead, long-term deals with relatively low wages, in comparison to what was being offered under the Roman Abramovich reign. Disagreements based on a wage package saw negotiations placed on hold until after the World Cup, but Chelsea were a tad busy in the first month of 2023.

The January transfer window soon became the priority, with talks now set to resume at the end of the season, meaning Mount faces a decisive few months in a Chelsea shirt to prove he is worthy of his contract demands.
The uncertainty surrounding his future in west London prompted significant interest from several English clubs and those abroad. From the Premier League, Liverpool, Manchester United, and most recently Manchester City, have been the clubs linked with making a move for the 24-year-old.
Jurgen Klopp's side are in a similar position to the Blues, with a significant midfield rebuild needed in the coming windows. Former Reds winger Steve McManaman has been discussing Mount's situation at Chelsea, believing the England international may leave west London of he can't see himself being a regular in the side.
“I can see him moving to another Premier League club, but I could say that about any Chelsea player," he told Betfred. Chelsea have so many players in their team that something has to give.
“If you’re Mason Mount, then you’re going to want to play every single game and if you’re suddenly in limbo because you don’t know what’s going on with all the new players getting brought in around you, then you’re going to want to know what’s going to happen regarding your future.
“I don’t know how much Mason Mount would cost but I do believe Liverpool could afford to bring in two good midfielders because I believe Liverpool have the finances this summer, I really do.”
