Once viewed as indispensable, Mason Mount has seen his contract talks with Chelsea stall over recent weeks. With less than 18 months remaining on his current deal, the English midfielder’s future is looking increasingly likely to be away from west London.
Liverpool have become "increasingly confident" of signing the 24-year-old, talkSPORT reports, with some sources close to Mount suggesting a move to Merseyside is in fact "highly likely". However, Mount may not be the only homegrown Chelsea talent to leave the club during the next transfer window.
Speaking via Football Daily, journalist David Ornstein suggested fellow academy graduates Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Conor Gallagher could join Mount out the door. “If Chelsea sell any of those players [Mount, Loftus-Cheek, Gallagher], which is highly possible now, they would bank complete profit in terms of their accounts. That’s very attractive as a prospect,” Ornstein explained.

“There may not be a great deal of room for sentiment in these decisions now. I think Chelsea are going to operate in what they’re seeing, the evidence, the numbers, the data.
“If players aren’t performing to the levels they want, or aren’t part of their vision and good offers come in for them, then I think they might be quite clinical about it. We know that the Mason Mount contract talks have essentially been parked until the summer at which point Chelsea are going to sell him or renew his contract.
“He’s turned down a couple of offers so far. That’s a really interesting situation.”
The most likely destination for Mount appears to be Liverpool, as Jurgen Klopp looks to revamp his midfield options. While the former Derby loanee was once the first name on the team sheet for both Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel, he has seen his importance in the side dwindle under Graham Potter throughout this campaign.
With an already-bloated squad, which saw eight further additions in the January transfer window, the Blues are set to welcome six more players next season with deals already completed and loanees returning, such as Romelu Lukaku, Callum Hudson-Odoi and the newly-signed Christopher Nkunku. This will make regular starting berths even harder to come by for the English trio, and all three could seek new employers with the offer of more minutes.
