Roma are eyeing up a shock move for Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood this summer.
Greenwood, 21, was suspended by the Red Devils in January 2022 after he was charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. Police confirmed in February that Greenwood "no longer faces criminal proceedings" as the Crown Prosecution Service had dropped all charges.
United have carried out an investigation into the allegations themselves and are weighing up restoring Greenwood to Erik ten Hag's first-team squad. That investigation is studying whether he brought the club into disrepute and was in breach of his contract.
While he remains suspended, Greenwood has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford and Roma are the latest club to have shown interest in the England international. Jose Mourinho has reached out to the forward about signing him on loan for the 2023/24 season, despite not playing since January 2022.
A source told The Sun : "Jose rang Mason’s dad and also spoke with Mason. He told him the best way out of his current situation is to start playing football - and that eventually all the hassle will fade away.
"Mason was pleased that he got in touch and it has lifted his spirits. He wants to get back playing and is just waiting for United to tell him what the future holds."
Several other Serie A clubs, including Juventus and AC Milan, have been linked with signing Greenwood, who started back training last week for the first time since the charges were dropped.
During that training session, Greenwood worked on his close control and shooting during a 90-minute session at a public sports centre. The striker was not wearing his usual Nike boots after the firm curtailed its sponsorship of him.
Greenwood was wearing a black T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms for the session, as well as a fitness monitor. A goalkeeper was also present at the session, to allow Greenwood the chance to conduct shooting practice.
The forward is still currently under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2025. He has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for United having made his senior debut in the Champions League in March 2019, and won a single England cap in 2020.
