Keane’s Tom Chaplin insisted he was dressed as a lurid, seven foot Poodle on the Masked Singer in memory of his wife’s late dog.
The singer was unmasked on Saturday night, and explains: “One of the prerequisites of doing the show was that I had to be a poodle.
“My wife had a poodle who lived to 17 and was an integral part of our lives, so it seemed like the perfect choice.”
Tom watched his performances snuggled up at home in Wittersham, Kent with his golden doodle - a golden retriever and poodle cross - named Glorious, who also goes by the name Carlos Poochdemont.
But he has no plans to wear the costume indoors.
“I’ll be a happy man if I never have to squeeze my skinny legs into that suit again,” he laughs.
But, he adds: “I’ve got to a point in my life where I don’t take myself too seriously anymore.
“I think that’s pretty important if you’re going to dress up as a seven foot multicoloured poodle. It was fun putting on a ridiculous voice and leading everyone astray.
“Above all, the puns available when you’re playing a dog were the highlight.”
It’s ruff justice that he’s gone.
- The Masked Singer continues on Saturdays at 7pm on ITV.
