In a recent ruling, Maryland’s Supreme Court determined that the 2022 court hearing that led to Adnan Syed's release from prison violated the legal rights of the victim’s family and must be redone. Syed, who gained global attention through the hit podcast “Serial,” was convicted in 2000 of killing his high school ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee.

The 4-3 ruling, issued about 11 months after arguments were heard last October, highlighted the ongoing legal saga surrounding Syed's case. The court deliberated on the rights of crime victims to participate in hearings where a conviction could be vacated, ultimately siding with the Lee family in favor of a redo of the hearing that granted Syed his freedom.

Syed, now 43, has consistently maintained his innocence and expressed concern for Lee’s surviving relatives. The case dates back to 1999 when Lee was found strangled to death and buried in an unmarked grave. Syed was sentenced to life in prison, plus 30 years.
