Donald Trump’s niece Mary Trump, in a new Substack post that was published on Thursday, underlined the hypocrisy of Republican lawmakers.
What Happened: “It’s a reminder that in the world of the GOP, as long as you play ball and let them lie, cheat, and steal their way into destroying the country, they’ve got your back,” said Mary Trump in the post.
The ex-president’s niece, who is a psychologist, particularly called out House Republicans for holding votes to reduce the salaries of Vice President Kamala Harris and White House Press Secretary Karine Jeanne-Pierre to $1, instead of governing. She also said that Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), the chair of the House Oversight Committee, was trying to “dig up dirt on both President [Joe] Biden and his son, Hunter [Biden],” the latter of whom is not a government official.
Biden transferred $200,000 to his brother in 2018 and, two months later, the latter and his wife sent back a check for the same amount as loan repayment, Mary Trump noted. Comer, however, has called the transaction “troubling” and believes that Biden is lying about it, she added.
Taking a dig at Comer, Mary Trump said, “I’m not the powerful chair of the Oversight Committee on a mission to undermine Pres. Biden at every turn — even if that means making shit up about him and his son.”
Mary Trump, who is also a podcast host, noted that a Daily Beast report said that Comer had loaned the same amount of money to his brother but that the transaction was “not nearly as above-board.” “But perhaps it’s not the Biden loan that’s controversial for Republicans — it’s the paying the loan back that’s problematic,” she said.
There’s Precedence In GOP: Donald Trump, the party’s “standard bearer,” is also “deeply averse” to paying back money he borrowed, Mary Trump said. “Vast portions of Donald’s wealth were essentially built upon unpaid loans,” she said.
She noted that her grandfather Fred Trump had transferred the equivalent of $413 million to Donald Trump through loans, which her uncle never repaid. These were “untaxed gifts,” she said.
“Republican hypocrisy and projection have been part of the Party’s DNA since at least 1992, when Newt Gingrich was cheating on his wife while he was, at the same time, the driving force behind the impeachment of Bill Clinton,” Mary Trump said.
Mary Trump also took aim at Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who recently announced that he wouldn’t be running for the Senate again. She noted that Manchin and his family made millions from his position in the Senate, “mostly from the coal industry.” “He is willing to hurt the country at expense of the health and environment of his own state. In other words, he’s a model Republican,” she said.
“Manchin. Donald. Comer. They’re all simply acting in the finest tradition of a Party that has no interest in policy or governance,” Mary Trump said, adding “The hypocrisy is just a bonus.”
