The queen of cakes gave her royal seal of approval to an Ayrshire apple pie.

Mary Berry munched her way through the sweet treat on primetime TV and gave it rave reviews.

The dame of British baking had the pleasure of sampling Beth Brownings Bakery's award-winning fruity staple on ITV's Love your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh.

Food writer and chef Jonathan Phang hosted the segment on the best of British aiming to celebrate artisan producers putting the country on the map.

The TV gardener and treasured baker was joined by Fresh Meat actress Charlotte Ritchie to tuck into the famous Ayrshire pie.

Jonathan Phang told viewers: "We've got a really gorgeous British dessert for you today. We're going to kick off with an apple pie which is a classic favourite really by the Beth Brownings bakery in Kilmarnock.

"So, Beth came from a family of bakers, three generations and she beat over 300 hopefuls and won the Scottish championship pie of the year in 2017 and she's never looked back.

"She will not reveal any of her secrets of her pies at all, they remain under lock and key, but she's gone from strength to strength."

The pie was paired with a rum cocktail.

Phang continued: "We're pairing it with some spiced rum which I think is the perfect things to go with apple pie

She said: "It goes very well with the apple pie.

"A good apple pie. It's got a lovely crust on the outside; it's almost like a shortbread on the top rather than a pastry."
