Mary Berry speechless after cheeky quip about former Bake Off co-star Paul Hollywood

Dame Mary Berry was left speechless during her appearance on Celebrity MasterChef, after one contestant gushed over her Great British Bake Off co-star Paul Hollywood.

The food writer and baker, 87, appeared on Thursday night's episode of the BBC show as the seven semi-finalists were tasked with serving up dishes based on recipes created by Mary.

The national treasure joined Gregg Wallace as they spoke to contestants. The pair quizzed RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Kitty Scott-Claus about how her preparations were coming along.

Gregg said: "How are you, cooking for Dame Mary Berry?"

"I am very, very excited," Kitty replied before adding: "I wish Paul Hollywood was here too, because he’s a bit of a dish and all."

Mary, who appeared on Bake Off alongside 56-year-old Paul for six years, appeared shocked by the remark. Kitty then added: "No offence Mary, you’re gorgeous too.

"But Paul Hollywood… phwoar, those eyes."

Mary replied: "He’s known for those."

Fans often fawn over Paul's piercing blue eyes, with the celebrity chef previously saying he has his grandfather to thank for them.

Speaking on the Hits Breakfast Show back in 2019, Paul said his grandma used to tell him that he had his "grandad's eyes".

"I was looking at photographs and they're very, very similar, so it's my Grandad I've got to blame for them," he added.

The semi-final episode saw Kitty compete against fellow celebrities including Love Island star Faye Winter, McFly musician Danny Jones, former professional footballer Jimmy Bullard, presenter Lisa Snowdon, actor Cliff Parisi and singer Mel Blatt.

The first semi-final airing tonight was originally scheduled for the day Queen Elizabeth II died.

In a statement shared on social media, the official account for MasterChef said: "#CelebrityMasterChef returns to BBC One & @bbciplayer with a double bill from 8:30pm tonight.

"The first episode includes a challenge inspired by Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, and was filmed before last week’s sad news. #MasterChefUK."

The first of the final episodes will air on Friday (September 16) at 9pm, and will see the finalists show off their culinary skills for 12 iconic BBC names at Alexandra Palace.

Finals week will continue on Tuesday (September 20) at 8pm, before the grand finale on Thursday (September 22) at 8.30pm, where the final three will be challenged to cook and present a faultless three-course meal in two hours.
