Marvel’s Wolverine finally returns with new State of Play gameplay trailer

Marvel’s Wolverine returned during Sony’s latest State of Play, giving players a new look at Insomniac Games’ long-awaited PS5 action game.

The trailer is the latest major update for a game PlayStation fans have been waiting for since 2021. Marvel’s Wolverine was first revealed during the same PlayStation Showcase that also announced Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and for a long time, that short teaser was almost all Sony had shown in public.

The new trailer focuses on Logan trying to save people kidnapped by a mysterious group known as the Reavers.

The footage showcases the game’s meaty combat and the destructibility of the environment, traversal, including the bike chase sequence, and we also had a first look at Jean Grey helping out Logan in combat. Mystique and Sabretooth also made a cameo, but we don’t know their roles yet. It’s likely we will see other X-Men and mutants in the game, both as allies and enemies.

Insomniac said:

Drawn in by a frantic plea for help, Logan and Jean are compelled to team up against Trask’s hired guns, and they prove to be more than capable. Logan can carve into foes with special combat moves called “Techniques” such as the Tornado Spin and Bull Rush. Meanwhile, Jean obliterates enemies with her powerful telekinetic abilities, which presents a few opportunities for Critical Strikes. These are devastating finishing moves that Wolverine can execute solo or with other characters; they’re takedown opportunities worth looking out for during a frenzied fight.

Insomniac has already made clear that Marvel’s Wolverine is darker and more violent than its Spider-Man games, we saw as much in the previous long trailer that dove deep into what makes Logan tick, and how Insomniac intended to bring him to life. A Wolverine game without real weight behind the combat would feel wrong from the start. Logan’s stories work best when the action has consequences.

Instead of Peter’s and Miles’ acrobatic moves and fast traversal, we have meaty and bloody combat, with Logan being agile, but still much more grounded and beefy.

Marvel’s Wolverine is being developed for PlayStation 5 in collaboration with Marvel Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The game is coming out on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PlayStation 5. Pre-orders are going live today in select markets.

If the rumors are to be believed, Marvel’s Wolverine is not coming to PC due to Sony’s shift in strategy.
