'Marvel's Wolverine' Faces Comparisons to 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' as Fans Debate the Better Game

Wolverine has never had an easy life in Marvel Comics. Logan has been stabbed, crushed, burned, and torn apart more times than most heroes could survive. His healing factor keeps him moving, while his adamantium skeleton makes him one of Marvel's toughest characters.

That history has created huge expectations for "Marvel's Wolverine," the upcoming PlayStation 5 game from Insomniac Games. Fans have wanted a darker and more mature X-Men experience for years. The game's mature rating has only increased those expectations.

Recent leaks, however, have started an unexpected discussion. Some fans are questioning whether the new game can actually surpass "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," a 2009 title that became famous for being far more entertaining than the movie it was based on.

Why 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' Still Remains Relevant After 17 Years

Movie tie-in games have a reputation for being rushed and forgettable. Developers often had to release them alongside films, leaving little time to polish the final product.

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" broke that pattern.

While the movie received plenty of criticism, the game took a much darker approach to Logan. Its Uncaged Edition featured an M rating and delivered graphic violence, blood, and real-time dismemberment.

The brutality was also a major part of its appeal. Wolverine did not simply defeat enemies. His claws could tear through opponents while his healing factor visibly repaired the damage he took during combat.

For many players, that made the character feel closer to the Wolverine seen in Marvel Comics.

'Marvel's Wolverine' Faces Early Comparisons

According to Gaming Bible, recent footage reportedly showing a major Sentinel encounter has brought the 2009 game back into the spotlight.

Some fans now argue that the Sentinel battle in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" still looks more impressive. That is notable considering the game was released more than 15 years ago.

Other criticism has focused on "Marvel's Wolverine." Logan's character design, combat system, and possible story direction have all become subjects of discussion as more leaked footage appears online.

There is an important caveat, though.

Leaks do not represent the complete game. Early footage can change significantly before release. Insomniac's finished version may look and play very differently from what fans have seen so far.

Why 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' Is Hard to Play Today

Another reason the 2009 game remains part of the conversation is its limited availability.

Activision's licensing arrangements with Marvel eventually expired. As a result, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" disappeared from major digital storefronts.

Other older Marvel games have faced similar problems. Titles such as "Deadpool" and the original "Marvel: Ultimate Alliance" games have also become difficult to obtain digitally.

That has made physical copies of some versions more desirable among collectors and longtime Marvel fans.

Can 'Marvel's Wolverine' Surpass the 2009 Game?

"Marvel's Wolverine" has the advantage of modern hardware, a major development studio, and years of advances in game design. It also has the opportunity to deliver a Wolverine experience without being tied to a movie release.

Still, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" has something that cannot simply be recreated with better graphics. It already has a legacy.
