Martin Roberts issues update on Homes Under the Hammer future after health scare

Martin Roberts issued an update on his Homes Under the Hammer future on today's This Morning.

The Warrington presenter appeared on Wednesday's edition of ITV's flagship daytime programme to discuss his recent health scare. The 58-year-old was rushed to hospital last month after experiencing troubles with breathing.

Martin initially thought he was experiencing symptoms of long-Covid, but was told by doctors he had a "a massive amount of fluid" surrounding his heart. He said: "The confusing thing about this, it’s a bit of a red herring, is that it gets you in the breathing side of things, so you don’t think it’s something to do with your heart.

"There’s a sack around your heart and it was filling with fluid, it’s called a pericardial effusion and that in turn is something called a tapenade, which basically means this sack is squeezing the heart it sits around, so the heart isn’t able to expand, and therefore isn’t able to pump, so it means all of your organs start failing.

"By the time they got to me, my kidneys were at 30 per cent, my liver was at 30 per cent, my lungs weren’t getting the oxygen and at any point, I could have had a heart attack…. The heart would have been strangled by itself.”

Martin was joined on the show by his wife, Kirsty, who described the ordeal as "worrying" - and called for a period of "readjustment". She added: "I did send a card to Martin when he came out of hospital and I said, ‘We do have to take this as a bit of a watershed moment.’

"And I said, ‘You’re just going to have to say no… we both have, we’ve lived life at 100mph and very rarely stop and smell the roses, as Martin would say. Times like this, you realise what’s important in life. And there’s going to have to be a readjustment."

Phillip Schofield hosted today's edition of This Morning and the presenter asked Martin what this means for his Homes Under the Hammer future. Martin will start filming new episodes of the hit BBC show in a few weeks and said he has no intention of quitting as he approaches a milestone anniversary.

He said: "I’ve got to get to 20 years. Hopefully I’ll get some nicer properties and they’ll cherry pick the good ones, rather than the really bad ones."

Phillip then asked Martin if he’d like to get to 21 years and Martin said, “Yeah, I’d like to carry on.”

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and the ITV Hub
