Martin O'Neill swerves Ange Postecoglou Celtic exit scenario as Crystal Palace checklist raises alternative theory

Celtic legend Martin O'Neill has pitched an alternative theory on who could take over at Crystal Palace - after Ange Postecoglou's name has been floated.

Patrick Vieira was axed at Selhurst Park after failing to secure a win in 2023, with the Eagles sitting in 12th spot in the English Premier League - but just three points above the relegation zone. The defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion proved to be a step too far for the Palace board as they opted to wield the axe on Friday morning - with bookmakers quickly named the Celtic boss among the runners to take over the hot seat.

Postecoglou has been touted for several jobs south of the border after impressing in the Scottish Premiership including Leeds United and Tottenham, but the Australian has insisted he is in no rush to leave Glasgow's east end as he targets a Treble this season. Despite this, talkSPORT host Jim White namechecked Postecoglou as a potential contender to take over with O'Neill in the studio.

White riffed off the candidates, noting that the majority of the list were manager's out of work - but highlighted the Celtic boss as the outlier in the oddsmakers long-list. White said: "Benitez is in there, Hassenhuttl is available. It's all who is available. Bielsa is available, Jesse Marsch is available. Postecoglou is not. Gerrard is, Lampard is."

White put the candidate list to O'Neill after name-checking the Parkhead boss - but O'Neill quickly moved the conversation on to his preferred candidate. The Celtic Park icon responded: "Well, Roy Hodgson has been there before if you are looking at a short-term fix.

"I would point to him, because he knows a lot of the player's there. He would know the set-up. If you are looking at managers that don't know the club and come in, by the time they get to know their strengths and weaknesses the season will nearly be over."
