Martin O'Neill in next Rangers boss cautionary note as Celtic icon explains why they can't 'battle it out' with Ange

Celtic legend Martin O'Neill reckons the next Rangers boss will have to launch a massive January recruitment drive if they are to catch Ange Postecoglou's league leaders.

The defending champions are on course for a second consecutive title victory with the Scottish Premiership on hold during the World Cup, with Postecoglou's men holding a nine point advantage over their city rivals. That lead saw the Rangers board decide to axe Gio van Bronckhorst as they look to appoint a new boss to kick-start their campaign and push Celtic for top spot.

Michael Beale is the frontrunner for the vacant hot seat with Steven Gerrard's former assistant being considered by Rangers, while the club weigh up an approach to QPR. However, O'Neill has warned that the problems at the club don't stop in the dugout. He insists Rangers will need to spend in the winter window having failed to replace key figures Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey last summer.

When asked if Rangers will need to refresh: “Without question. I think everybody can see that. You can’t lose the calibre of player that they did during the summer time and not really replace that at all, and then expect to battle it out without Celtic.

“Celtic are on a run at this minute. The Champions League, in terms of experience, were brilliant and domestically they have been so strong.

“They are a side that can score some late goals and win some matches. I think psychologically when you are on the other side of the fence and cheering on Dundee United, Hibs or anybody. Then the next thing you hear is the news from Ibrox of a late goal and it just kills your spirit; I know the feeling.

“That is happening now. Celtic are on a roll and it’s up to Rangers to stop them."
