Tributes have poured in following news of the passing of former Down player and MND campaigner Martin Lynch.
Described by a clubmate as “the fittest fella you’ve ever met” it emerged that Martin had been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease early last year.
In July, Martin’s St John Bosco hosted the #Legends4Lyncho fundraiser with the likes of DJ Kane, Mickey Linden, Sean Cavanagh, Oisin McConville, Steven McDonell, Benny Tierney and Marty Clarke among those who suported the event.

Martin captained the Down team to an Ulster U21 Football Championship title in 1984 and featured on the Down senior squad in the late 80s.
He was also an integral part of the St John Bosco side who won the Down Intermediate title in 1996.
A keen athlete, Martin also took part in a number of triathlons and won an All-Ireland masters cycling event as well as a host of cup titles with Carnbane League side Newry Celtic.
Confirming the news of Martin’s untimely death on Monday morning, the Legends4Lyncho Facebook page posted: “It is with great regret that we learn of Marty’s passing today. Legend is an often used word but in Marty’s case it was totally justified - thank you all for supporting Marty and his raising awareness of MND - rest in peace dear friend.”
St John’s Bosco added: “Very sad news this morning. Rest in peace Marty, a true legend and will be sorely missed.”
Gearóid Mac Aodh called Martin Lynch “one of Newry’s gentleman” while former Down star Shane Mulholland added: Awful news. RIP Marty.”
