Martin Lewis warning as millions miss out on extra £160

Martin Lewis is urging millions of people to check if they're eligible for £160 a year in financial support.

The Money Saving Expert founder regularly shares tips and tricks for people to save, or in this case get their hands on, money. And it's never been more needed amid the worsening cost of living crisis.

On Wednesday, Mr Lewis took to Twitter to warn people they could be overpaying when it comes to their water bills.

He said: "Are you in one of six million homes missing £160 a year help with your water bill? Check here..." before sharing a link to an MSE article.

The report says water is "the forgotten utility" as many people think they can't save any money as they can't switch providers. It also says around 5.7m people are not claiming a "social tariff", despite being eligible.

This means they're missing out on around £160 every year, though the amount varies depending on where you live. For example, with United Utilities, people can see between £90 and £492 taken off their annual bills.

Eligibility also varies depending on your provider, but with United Utilities you could be able to claim if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Universal Credit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Council Tax Reduction/Support
  • Pension Credit

Some Martin Lewis fans have also reported savings when switching to a water meter. This free water meter calculator tells you if you could be able to reduce your bills by doing the same.
