Consumer champion Martin Lewis won the award for Best TV Expert at the National Television Awards (NTAs) on Thursday night and used the opportunity to urge "somebody" in the UK Government to "get a grip on the economy" as he gave his acceptance speech.
The founder of MoneySavingExpert.com and his team have worked tirelessly throughout the year to help millions of households across the UK understand how soaring energy prices, rising inflation and changes in government will impact on their finances. The financial journalist didn't mince his words after beating Sir David Attenborough, Jay Blades and Kaleb Cooper to scoop the inaugural award.
After expressing his shock at the win, he said how the cost of living crisis has been "disastrous" and has left many people with mental health problems. He also warned that the next year is going to be even more difficult with the knock-on effect to mortgages and rents.
Martin told the audience and millions of people watching at home: "The next year with the mortgage problem and the knock-on to rents is going to be pretty bad, and you know what? We need somebody to get a grip on the economy and make things a little better. But I shall leave that for my show which is back on next Tuesday. Tonight this nerd is going to party, thank you."
Fans took to social media to show their gratitude and praise Martin for his continuous efforts.
One person wrote on Twitter: "The guys heroic in my eyes! Keep up the great work."
Another commented: "Congratulations. The NTA award couldn't have gone to a better person, who truly stands with the majority of this country and isn't afraid to speak out on behalf of others."
A third wrote: "You truly deserve every accolade going. Thank you Martin and your team for all you do! Enjoy the celebrations and many congratulations! Your family must be so proud of you, as are we! You make such a difference! Fancy going for PM???"
A sentiment shared by many as one posted: "Martin Lewis for PRIME MINISTER... I can't think of anyone else I would trust more in Parliament for representing the interests of the people."
Martin later shared a snap of himself holding the gong beside his wife, Lara Lewington, on Twitter with the caption: "Still gobsmacked. Thanks to all who voted. Its a huge privilege to have your support. I don't really drink, maybe one a year, but maybe it'll be tonight."
The Martin Lewis Money Show Live returns to ITV/STV on Tuesday, October 17 at 8pm in a new hour-long format.
