Martin Lewis urgently advises energy customers to apply for £140 Warm Home Discount

Martin Lewis has issued an urgent update to energy customers, telling them to apply for the Warm Home Discount if they are eligible before the scheme closes.

People on a low income who receive their gas and electricity from either Bulb, E.on, or So Energy may be entitled to save £140 on their bills.

Speaking on The Martin Lewis Money Show, the financial guru went on to explain that people who have reached a particular age will receive the discount automatically.

Those who are on the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit do not need to apply.

As reported by the Daily Record, all other eligible recipients must apply manually in order to obtain the savings.

Lewis stated that the eligibility criteria of the discount differs depending on the supplier, though generally is available to those on means-tested benefits such as Jobseeker’s Allowance, Universal Credit and Income Support.

Here's what you need to know about the Warm Home Discount.

Am I eligible for the Warm Home Discount?

There are two ways to qualify for the Warm Home Discount Scheme:

  • You get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit - known as the ‘core group’
  • You’re on a low income and meet your energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme - known as the ‘broader group’

How you apply for the Warm Home Discount Scheme depends on how you qualify for the discount.

Pre-pay or pay-as-you-go meters

You can still qualify for the discount if you use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter.

Your electricity supplier can tell you how you will get the discount if you’re eligible, for example a voucher you can use to top up your meter.

How to apply

It is up to your supplier who is eligible for the saving, and the number of discounts that they can offer is limited.

Check with your supplier as early as possible to see if you’re eligible and how to apply - check with them even if you were eligible for a discount last year.

Your electricity supplier will apply the discount to your bill by March 31, 2022.
