Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis has taken to social media to shut down a potentially lethal conspiracy theory around energy bills and meters. Martin spoke out after being asked about the theory - and whether it would work - to say it definitely isn't true.
People are trying to find any way they can to cut energy bills after a 54% hike in the cost of gas and electricity at the start of this month. Some people think that if you don't have a meter at all - you won't pay any bills.
Martin responded to the idea on Twitter saying: "There's a conspiracy theory suggestion I keep being asked about that energy charges are 'for having a meter' not for fuel use. Therefore 'remove the meter & you use energy for free'. It's just nonsense. You pay for the units of fuel you use, and a standing charge."
