Martin Lewis sends OBE back after having honour 'taken' from him

Martin Lewis has revealed he is sending back his OBE after having it "taken" from him.

The Money Saving Expert founder was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2014 Birthday Honours for services to consumer rights and to charitable services. He has spent many years tirelessly working to help people in the UK save or reclaim cash, and it's never been needed more than now.

And on Monday, Mr Lewis said he was sending the honour back.

Taking to Twitter, he said: "They're taking my OBE off me! Yep, I got a letter saying now I have been upgraded to a CBE, I need to send the OBE back. So off it goes."

At the beginning of 2022, Mr Lewis was awarded a CBE for services to broadcasting and consumer rights in the Queen's New Year Honours. But his sneaky tweet tricked many of his fans.

Replying to his social media post, Libby Lloyd said: "Scared me for a minute! Congratulations", while Lyndia said: "Was enraged on reading the first sentence! Then I read the second, quite right you are being upgraded. Thank you for all you have done, and continue to do".

Others said he should be given a knighthood. Trish Jordan said: "Congratulations, should be knighted though". Richard Osborne said: "Very well deserved but Sir Martin Lewis has a good ring to it".
