Martin Lewis says 'we need political intervention' to fix cost of living crisis

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has called on the Government and Chancellor Rishi Sunak to do more to fix the cost of living crisis. He suggested the Chancellor should "suck in his ideology" and said the UK government has the money to alleviate further the worst effects of rising energy prices.

Speaking to Sophie Raworth on the BBC's Sunday Morning programme, Mr Lewis said there is the real prospect household energy bills going up by £1,300 a year and around 10 million people left in fuel poverty. He added: "We have a real, absolute poverty issue going to come in the UK, with foodbanks over-subscribed."

He said he was "virtually out of tools to help people" as pressures from the pandemic recovery, Brexit, net-zero policies and the Ukraine war collectively push up prices, adding: "It's not something money management can fix, it's not something that telling people on the lowest incomes to tighten their belts will work, we need political intervention."
