Martin Lewis reveals the hours you should never use your washing machine

Money Saving Expert (MSE) founder Martin Lewis has been talking about the cost of living crisis - specifically the current situation concerning energy and how people can save cash.

The financial guru recently gave money-saving advice about when we should be using certain appliances such as washing machines, warning there are certain hours we should avoid putting them on in a bid to help save on energy bills.

Appearing on ITV’s This Morning, according to MyLondon, and delivering what he called a “general energy security message” that should have “been said more by the government”. He explained: “We are looking at energy difficulties this winter. We hope there will not be any blackouts.

"But there are emergency scenarios where power cuts - short power cuts - in different regions are possible that have been put forward by National Grid.”

The peak of electricity usage in the UK is between 4pm and 7pm which means that if millions of households use high power devices, this could increase the chances of the National Grid becoming overloaded meaning a blackout is most likely to happen - especially on a "really, really cold day" between these prime hours.

Martin explained that people should avoid, where possible, turning on their washing or drying machines during this time in a bid to help each other out.

He added: “Let’s all try not to put stuff we don’t need to put on between 4pm and 7pm. If we can avoid using lots of energy between 4pm and 7pm and it makes no difference to our lives, then we should all be somewhat conscious of that, whether or not it’s cheaper, because it will collectively help us all."

It comes after the National Grid warned blackouts could be on the way with homes across the UK - including in Glasgow - being offered a discount for to use less electricity at peak times. This has already happened with two taking place on Monday (January 23) with a second discount offered on Tuesday (January 24). No more have been planned as of now.
