Martin Lewis' new advice for those on pre-payment energy meters

Martin Lewis has issued new advice for any pre-payment energy customers.

The government has issued energy bill help to all households with all homes receiving £400 off their energy bills from October, with the discount made in six instalments to help families throughout the winter period. Households will see a discount of £66 applied to their energy bills in October and November, rising to £67 each month from December through to March 2023.

However, some people on pre-payment meters have been struggling to claim their payments. PayPoint said just over half (53%) of the 800,000 vouchers it has issued have been redeemed, which means that households are so far missing out on around £27 million in support that would be paid by the UK Government.

Money Saving Expert, Martin, took to social media to share a reason as to why so many people could be missing out. He also offered new advice to make sure that everyone gets the money that they are owed.

He suggested that people may be unable to redeem their voucher as they do not have Photo ID as proof of their identity, but advised that a household utility bill or bank statement dated within the last 12 months should work - emphasising the ‘should’.

The consumer expert wrote: "I'm hearing some people are unable to claim their Energy Support £66/mth vouchers (for non-smart prepay meters) because the vouchers say you need photo ID - and you may not have. If so they should (can't promise) accept a a household bill or bank statement (dated within 12mths)."

If you are on a traditional pre-payment meter then your supplier should have already been in touch to let you know how you receive the credit - which will be either through vouchers or a credit.

If you get discount vouchers, these will be sent to you by text message, email or post. Alternatively, you might have been told that you’ll be credited automatically when you top up at your usual top-up point. You should get in touch with your supplier now if they haven’t already contacted you about how you’ll get your discount.
