Martin Lewis explains why it's meter reading day for most of us, and how it'll cost you money if you don't do it

Today is the day (March 31) before the changes in energy prices kick in across the UK bringing bill-paying misery to millions of households as energy prices are set to increase by a staggering 54 per cent and many will forced to tighten their belts even more (and they're already pretty tight, let's be honest).

Speaking live from his home on ITV's This Morning, finance journalist and Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis urged viewers to take heed of his advice today regarding reading their energy meters. He said: "Let's ignore everything energy companies are saying. They're not saying it's 'meter reading day', I'm saying it's 'meter reading day'."

Martin continued to explain: "If you're on a price-capped tariff, which is 75 per cent of people, your rate is going to go up 54 per cent tomorrow."

"If you don't do a meter reading - let's say you did you last meter reading a month ago, and you do your next one in a month - you've got a two month period where in the middle the energy price goes up, they're going to look at your useage across that period and they're going to proportion some for when it was cheap and some for when it's expensive." Martin has also tweeted advice to take a photo of your reading when you take it to avoid any room for dispute.
