Martin Lewis' 'desperate' cheaper ways to stay warm amid energy crisis

Martin Lewis and his team at Money Saving Expert have launched a "cost of living survival guide" after the finance guru said he was inundated with emails from "folk so desperate they can't put the heat on".

The package is full of tips and tricks to help people who need to cut down on their energy usage as the cost of living soars and average energy bills jump up by around £700 a year. There are 90 tips in total, and the first one consists of ways to "heat the human" instead of the entire house.

Martin said: "I felt sad asking my team to put this together, but my email bag is full of folk so desperate they can't put the heat on, I wanted to try some help.". He also said: "Don't see it as a 'we say you should', more as options and info if you must drastically cut down on energy usage".

Martin pointed out in his guide that it costs only £14 to buy a cheap electric blanket which in turn, costs 3p an hour to run, even in today's climate of rising costs. That equals a cost per week of £1.37 if used for seven hours a day.

An electric gilet, basically a heated jacket, would cost £46 to buy and just 4p per week to run. Meanwhile USB gloves would cost 4p per week to run and just £5 to buy.

One MSE follower said: "I wear several layers of clothes including insulated trousers in a larger size to wear over another pair of trousers." Another said: "The days of me throwing tights away once they've had it is over, I chop the feet off and wear then under trousers and it is amazing what a difference it makes!"

Fellow consumer champion, Jack Monroe said to Martin: "Thank you for your vital and heartbreaking service, friend. I know this is taking a hell of a toll on you, please please take care of yourself out here. We need you now more than ever, but we need you well and fit for what’s to come"
