Martin Lewis 'act now' warning to avoid huge price hikes

Martin Lewis is warning people to "act now" to avoid huge price hikes in the coming months.

The Money Saving Expert founder told fans his "heart sank" when the 10.5% inflation figure was announced last week. In his weekly newsletter, he added: "It's that December figure which many broadband and mobile firms base their April increases on.

"Yet they don't stop there - most lump a further 3 or 4 percentage points on top."

Mr Lewis said for those who are still in contract, there is "little you can do", but advises making a note of when the contract ends and that you should "take action then". However, some 16 million people are able to do more about the situation, because they are out of contract.

The newsletter continues: "Ditch and switch or haggle, and you may halve what you pay. You'll still be hit by the price rise but, for example, 14% on £20/month is a lot less than 14% on £40/month".

More people currently pay between £30-£45 per month. Companies including BT and EE have announced a typical price rise of 14.4% in the last week. Meanwhile, Shell has confirmed a typical rise of up to 13.5%.
