Martin Lewis, the self-styled Money Saving Expert, has accused the government of "misleading" the public over the national insurance rise set to come in to force in April.
Lewis took aim at the Treasury in particular for its language over the tax hike. He said on Twitter: "Dear Treasury, please could you change the gov.uk website which is giving MISLEADING information about the NI rise. It says it is a 1.25% rise. That is not correct - for most it is a rise of just over 10%. The rate is rising by 1.25% points."
The amount of your pay that goes towards national insurance is to rise in April from 12 per cent to 13.25 per cent. Lewis's point is that this is a 1.25 percentage point increase, but since 1.25 is approximately 10 per cent of 12, it works out as a 10 per cent jump overall. The Treasury website does not make this clear.
