Scottish actor Martin Compston is heading west to Glasgow in the second-to-last episode of his travel BBC series, Scottish Fling.
The Line of Duty star is joined by fellow TV regular and pal Phil MacHugh, as they travel all over Scotland to figure out what makes our bonnie wee nation tick. In this episode, Martin and Phil travel Scotland’s Central Belt to explore why performance is such a big part of Scottish culture.
In this episode as Phil says: “We are celebrating the people who love to put on a show, learning from the actors, musicians and sportspeople who help this small nation punch above its weight on the global stage.”

And they put into practice all that they’ve learnt in their Central belt loop in an ultimate wrestling showdown.
The boys’ first destination is Scotland’s National Sporting Performance Centre just outside Edinburgh to meet the men’s football team whose performances pretty much defines the mood of the nation. Here they meet midfielder John McGinn to talk all things performance and what it means to have been part of the squad that finally qualified for a major tournament after 22 years.
And as it was penalties that got the team to the Euros it seems only fair that the boys face off against three of Scotland’s goalies – including penalty hero Craig Gordon - to get a taste of being put on the spot.
Martin and Phil then head westward Glasgow. Their destination is Hampden, but not the current national football stadium but rather the original, that’s now a bowling club.
Over a round of bowls – as you do - they meet up with musical stadium filler Amy Macdonald and discuss how Amy got into the industry and what it’s like to perform home and away.
They then travel to Edinburgh for a rendezvous with actor and comedian Greg McHugh to chat about his most famous character Gary Tank Commander and all things Edinburgh Festival.
Ayrshire beckons next and a young woman Millie who, thanks to Tik Tok, has created a massive fan base without the need to perform live. Instead, her stage is her bedroom where she’s managed to rack up over 100 million views.
Here she lets the boys into her success and naturally Phil can’t help but jump on those millions of followers by throwing himself into the world of online cosplay.
Glasgow again and the boys take to the ring at local Insane Championship Wrestling gym where they face each other in a tag team smackdown with local fighters Jester and Levi. A plucky Phil says: “Are you ready to rumble?”
Martin Compston's Scottish Fling will air on Thursday, October 6 at 10pm on BBC Scotland. This episode will also be shown on BBC Two on Friday, October 7 at 9.30pm.
