Martin Compston has discussed the future of Line of Duty amid rumours the show will return for a three-part special next year.
The Greenock-born actor, 39, starred as DCI Steve Arnott in the BBC crime drama alongside Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar. Fans have been desperate for Line of Duty to return after the sixth season aired and the notorious bent copper 'H' was unveiled.
The trio of actors have all spoken out about their desire to return to the cop drama, as Martin hints towards the rumoured return. He told The Sun: “We’d all love to work together again but we’re all doing different stuff. We’re all running around. It’s just timing, and to get to the same point.”
But he added: “It’s testament to what we created that everybody is still desperate for more. I love that people ask about it. The day people stop, it’ll be a sad day.”
The Line of Duty return seems to be the question of when it will happen, not, if due to the actor's busy schedules. Martin is set to reprise his role in the Amazon Prime series The Rig, while Vicky stars in Trigger Point and Adrian works on Ridley.
Martin added: “Jed never stops writing, Vicky’s putting bombs out, Aidan’s a singing detective, I’m off on an oil rig. The truth is, we’ve not signed on for anything at the moment.
“There’s just nothing at the minute. That does not mean it won’t happen. Just at this point, I genuinely don’t know. But we’ve always taken time off.
"Probably if this happened 20 years ago, I’d have been more like, ‘Oh, I need to get away from it’. You need to do something else.
“It’s the thing I’m most known for and I’m incredibly proud of it.”
The update comes after rumours swirled that the series would return for a series of three special episodes to tie up all the loose ends. A source told The Sun: “There was a very strong feeling, particularly among fans, that there was unfinished business with Line of Duty.
“The question is whether the person we were led to believe was H really is the villain that AC-12 has been hunting or if it was another nemesis.
“There’s also a theory another, darker puppet-master is at work."
