Martin Compston drops major hint Line of Duty could return for a seventh series

Line of Duty could be back for a seventh series after Martin Compston dropped a huge hint.

Martin, who plays Steve Arnott in the BBC cop drama, said he sat down with the show's writer Jed Mercurio recently.

The sixth season ended in May last year after the mysterious H was finally revealed - with the finale facing a lukewarm response from avid fans.

But viewers could be in luck as Martin teased the AC-12 could possibly be back on screens soon.

The actor, 38, said told The Sun : "We sat down with Jed recently. We’ve always taken a year or two between series. This is no different.

"We won’t do it for the sake of it. We’ll do it if there’s something to tell," he added.

DSI Ian Buckells was unmasked as the antagonist after being teased for six series.

But fans were desperate for more, which Martin said he was flattered by.

He added it was "amazing" that viewers want the show to return - saying the cast are his "best friends".

Martin recently prompted speculation among fans when he posted a photo of himself having dinner with co-stars Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar and show creator Jed, captioning the image ‘Talking tattoo designs’.

He told GMB: “We did say if we ever got 12 million (viewers) we would get tattoos of ‘AC-12 million’. If we ever do another series I think it will be something we all do together then.”

Asked whether there was another series in the works, McClure said: “Nothing’s planned as yet – we just went out for a nice meal.

“I’m telling the truth. Nothing planned and set in stone. Like Martin said before, we always have a long break in between series so it’s not really too abnormal to what we normally do.”

He added: “We’re chuffed that people still want us to come back. We’ve done 10 years now.

“The fact that people still want to see the show is amazing and if there’s still a story to be told, I’m sure Jed will bring us back.”

Adrian Dunbar, who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings, also dropped hints that the show could be returning.

Speaking about Jed, he said: "I think there will be something else, and he is a showrunner in the American sense, in that he’s across everything and we only have one writer - it’s him.

“So that’s quite good. You don’t have to do the work on Jed’s scripts when they come in.”
