Former F1 driver and British commentator Martin Brundle has hit out at Fernando Alonso's "idiot" comment aimed at Lewis Hamilton stating that the Spaniard was "inaccurate and unfair".
Tempers boiled over after Hamilton closed the door on Alonso during the opening lap of Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix while the pair were vying for second. As a result, Hamilton's move caused their wheels to touch and the British driver's car left the ground.
The damaged caused resulted in Hamilton retiring from the race while Alonso went on to finish fifth. During the race Alonso slammed the seven-time world champion on team radio stating: "What an idiot! Closing the door from the outside.
"I mean, we had a mega start but this guy only knows how to drive and start in first."
After reviewing the footage Hamilton accepted the crash was his fault after failing to give Alonso enough space and said he had 'paid the price' with his race retirement.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Bundle agreed that Hamilton was at fault but criticised Alonso for his radio comments. He said: "Lewis said he couldn't see Fernando in his blind spot but frankly he was bound to be there somewhere, and the Spaniard tried his best to stay to the inside and give space.
"Lewis saw the footage and immediately put his hand up and correctly accepted full responsibility. Fernando's radio comments, albeit fuelled by anger and adrenaline, about Lewis only being able to win from the front were in my opinion wholly inaccurate and unfair.
"Lewis is one of the fairest and cleanest drivers in the history of F1, he hasn't needed to resort to too many professional fouls given his relentless speed, and just cast your mind back to Brazil last year to remember how he can scythe through the field. Twice."
