Martha Stewart's Instagram page is a treasure trove of baked goods and beautiful home decor, but lately, we're taking note of the lifestyle expert's fleurs. The latest post at the top of our radar comes in the shape of her cymbidium orchids, a lovely addition to her impressive collection of floral favorites.
The perfect antidote to the winter blues, the greenhouse orchids shown on Martha's page are delicate and colorful arrangements, healthily stemming in shades of pink, white, yellow, bronze, and purple.
For those looking to brighten up a room this season, there are many types of orchids that will elevate your home, but arguably none more so than the cymbidium. This genus of evergreen flowering plants (in the orchid family) is an ideal pick for its natural beauty and straightforward care instructions – so it's unsurprising they're so sought-after among those in the know.
'Using orchids as decorative floral displays, as Martha Stewart does, is a great way to create a statement in any room, particularly in the colder and darker months of the year when flowers are in short supply,' says H&G's Gardens Content Editor Thomas Rutter, who notes that cymbidium orchids are well known for producing stems full of magnificent blooms throughout the winter months.
When it comes to caring for the orchids, there are a few key steps, but overall, it's a highly manageable flower to maintain.
'They prefer bright but indirect light and enjoy a warm spot indoors,' Thom says. 'Always allow water to drain away from the container to avoid root rot. One trick to encourage more blooms in subsequent years is to give your cymbidium orchid a summer vacation, placing it outside during the warmer months.
The orchid's color variety is also a highlight for those looking to utilize arrangements as home decor with existing color palettes. Options include bright whites, pinks, and yellows.
'There is surely an orchid to suit your aesthetic and brighten up your home this winter,' Thom adds.
We, too, can decorate our homes with winter with this Martha-approved flower, available below.
