The new operator of the only hospital in Marshall, Missouri, says it ended labor and delivery because it would have to provide months of services without being able to bill for them, KCUR reported. The cut was announced just nine days after a bankruptcy sale closed in early September. Fitzgibbon Hospital had said it accepted the buyers' bid partly because they committed to continuing care, preserving jobs and participating in Medicare.
"You have over 100 days in the year that you have to maintain services, without having the ability to bill for those services," said Dr. Abdullah Arshad, chief medical officer of American Medical Administrators. He said labor and delivery could no longer be sustained.
