The final score of 76-58 showcased a dominant performance by Marquette, led by Kam Jones' remarkable triple-double of 17 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Purdue, with a record of 4-1, had not suffered a regular-season nonconference defeat since December 8, 2020, when they lost to Miami. This defeat ended the fourth-longest streak in NCAA history, with Syracuse holding the record at 52 consecutive nonconference regular-season wins from 2008 to 2012.
Jones' triple-double was a historic moment for Marquette, being only the third in the school's history. The last one was achieved by Dwyane Wade in 2003 during a crucial victory over Kentucky that propelled Marquette to the Final Four. The team's only other triple-double dates back to 1994.
Stevie Mitchell also shined for Marquette, scoring a career-high 21 points, while Chase Ross and Ben Gold contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively. On the Purdue side, Trey Kaufman-Renn led with 16 points, followed by Fletcher Loyer with 13 and Braden Smith with 11.
Despite the loss, Purdue had an impressive streak of 25 consecutive November wins come to an end. Marquette's victory highlighted Jones' evolution as a well-rounded player, showcasing career-highs in rebounds and assists.
The key moment in the game came when Marquette went on an 8-0 run, led by David Joplin, extending their lead to 14 points with less than five minutes remaining. This surge was capped off by a steal from Ross, leading to a layup by Mitchell.
Purdue struggled with turnovers, committing 15 compared to just three in their previous game against Alabama. Both teams are set to play their next games on Saturday, with Purdue hosting Marshall and Marquette facing Georgia in the Bahamas.
