Marks and Spencer shoppers divided over 2022 Christmas advert with 'national treasures' Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders

November has only just begun but it seems as though there is no time like the present when it comes to Christmas adverts. Retailer Marks and Spencer are amongst the first to release their much-anticipated festive TV ad for 2022 ahead of the likes of John Lewis, Aldi and Tesco.

Released on November 2, the one minute 30 second clip features voiceovers from well-known duo Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders. Actress and comedian Dawn narrated the retailer's advert last year where M&S' popular mascot Percy Pig was brought to life by Hollywood A-lister and Spiderman actor Tom Holland.

In their 2022 ad, M&S Food get a helping hand from Dawn and Jennifer to tell the tale of Fairy and her new pal Duckie. Beginning with a festive tune and a Christmassy setting, the clip starts with Fairy (Dawn) flying around the Christmas tree trying to find a new friend to help her.

Fairy then decides to bring the dog's toy Duckie to life, who is voiced by her real life best friend and comedy partner Jennifer.

Duckie is then chased around the tree by the dog before Fairy sprinkles her magic dust and helps Duckie to use her wings to fly away.

Fairy then shows Duckie an extravagant display of food spread across the dining table whilst voicing what shoppers can expect from M&S' Christmas food and drink range this yar.

The ad then ends with the classic tagline, "This is not just food, this is M&S Christmas food."

Sharing their 2022 Christmas advert on Twitter, @marksandspencer wrote: "The M&S Food Christmas ad is HERE… and our festive Fairy is back. This time, she brings a much-loved friend to life to discover the delights of the M&S Foodhall! Who better to flit about our festive spread with Dawn French than Jennifer Saunders?! WHAT A DUO!."

The ad has already amassed more than 26,000 views but has M&S shoppers divided. Whilst some are praising the clip, others were left disappointed with some thinking it was released too early.

@paulfmitchell wrote: "I like it. Fun and Christmassy. Not soppy or preachy. And featuring national treasures Dawn and Jen."

@MargaretClareM1 tweeted: "Good job M&S love the Xmas add," as @drama_mcqueen added: "This is now my favourite advertisement with my two favourite people."

But @DianaWa57571931 wrote: "So disappointed M&S, we haven’t even had Remembrance Day yet, and you’re already plugging Christmas (with, it has to be said, a very poor ad)! This puts you on a par with Very! So sad."

@Jennysalter2 agreed: "By the time Christmas comes, we will all be sick of this advert. December would be good enough. It's too soon!".
