Unseeded Markéta Vondroušová of the Czech Republic made history on Saturday in the women’s Wimbledon final, winning her first grand slam title in historic fashion, 6–4, 6–4 over 2022 runner-up Ons Jabeur.
With the victory, Vondrousova became the lowest-ranked winner and first-ever unseeded woman to capture the Wimbledon title. The 24-year-old, who is No. 42 in the world, was the first unseeded woman to reach the final at Wimbledon in 60 years, according to The Associated Press.
Vondroušová has been awaiting another opportunity to win a grand slam. She made the French Open final in 2019 as a 19-year-old, but fell to Ashleigh Barty in straight sets. Her run to capture the Wimbledon title was improbable, as she did not enter play at the All England Club with the best track record at the event. Vondrousova was just 1–4 in her previous appearances at Wimbledon before her 7–0 run to the championship this year.
As for Jabeur, it is yet another heartbreaking defeat in a grand slam final. She is now 0–3 in major championship matches, dating back to Wimbledon a year ago.
