NEW YORK—Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Mark Thompson has been appointed to the role of chairman and CEO of CNN Worldwide. 

Former director-general of the BBC and former president and CEO of The New York Times Company takes the top job at CNN at a time when the news organization has been struggling with massive changes in its traditional business. It also follows the short-tumultuous tenure of Christopher Licht, who left the company in June.
