Mark McGhee insists he wants to stay at Dundee next season – despite admitting their survival hopes are as good as over.
The disconsolate Dens boss saw his side crash 2-0 to St Mirren – a result that leaves them six points adrift of St Johnstone with two games remaining and a goal difference seven worse off.
Skipper Charlie Adam ’s blunder after four minutes handed the Buddies a dream start as Alex Greive knocked home before Curtis Main put the seal on victory in the second half.
It means McGhee, who signed a deal until the end of the season when he joined in February, is still searching for his first win as Dens boss after 12 matches – including 11 league games that have seen them take just five points. Asked if he hoped to stay beyond the summer, the 64-year-old said: “I came here hoping to stay. I’ve no idea really.
"We’ve not discussed it. I’d like to stay but we’ll see.”
Dundee now need two wins against Hibs and Livingston and for St Johnstone to lose to Aberdeen and the Easter Road side.
But McGhee said: “We have to think St Johnstone will take at least a point from the two games.
“We’re at home, we have to play for pride and be professional and turn up properly, roll up the sleeves, do the things we have been until today and show the supporters who come on Tuesday they care.
“I believe they do care regardless of how the performance was. The boys have shown that in recent weeks and we have to show that again.”
