Mark Lanegan, Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age singer, dies aged 57

Mark Lanegan, who was the singer of the rock band Screaming Trees and also performed with Queens Of The Stone Age, has died at the age of 57.

The US-born musician, who was also part of The Gutter Twins and made albums with former Belle & Sebastian member Isobel Campbell, died at his home in Killarney, Ireland.

A statement posted on Lanegan’s official Twitter account said: “Our beloved friend Mark Lanegan passed away this morning at his home in Killarney, Ireland.

“A beloved singer, songwriter, author and musician he was 57 and is survived by his wife Shelley.

“No other information is available at this time. We ask please respect the family privacy.”

Lanegan's recent memoir Devil In A Coma, published in December, detailed a fight with Covid-19 in 2021 that left him seriously ill, "slipping in and out of a coma, unable to walk or function for several months and fearing for his life."

Lord of the Rings actor Elijah Wood reacted to the news by writing on Twitter: “Aww man, Mark Lanegan.”

His UK publisher, White Rabbit Books, also paid tribute in a statement on Twitter, saying: "Mark Lanegan was a supremely gifted performer, songwriter, artist and author, and we are devastated to hear he has passed away. He will be deeply missed. His art will endure and only grow in stature. This is a colossal loss and our thoughts are with his family at this time."

And, alongside a picture of himself on stage with Lanegan, former New Order bassist Peter Hook tweeted: "Mark Lanegan was a lovely man. He led a wild life that some of us could only dream of. He leaves us with fantastic words and music! Thank god that through all of that he will live forever. RIP Mark. Sleep well."
