Here’s the news we’ve all been waiting for: Andy Dalton will continue to wear the No. 14 jersey that he’s used throughout his NFL career during his first season with the New Orleans Saints, having swapped out the No. 5 jersey he initially claimed with running back Mark Ingram II. So Dalton is wearing No. 14 again, and Ingram is in No. 5 for the first time.
Ingram has to be close to setting an NFL record for the most jersey numbers worn with one team, (Nos. 5, 14, 22, and 28) right? It could be a team record — Fred McAfee wore three different jersey numbers during his Saints tenure — but I’ll need to do more research to confirm. At any rate, it’s good to see he and Dalton are both happy.
Now what about Tyrann Mathieu? The hometown hero recently expressed his interest in wearing No. 5 himself, to honor his grandmother’s Fifth Ward community, but for now that number belongs to Ingram. He could get No. 5 from Ingram should a different number open up, but that’s not likely to happen until roster cuts begin later in August and early September. Some more dominoes may need to fall before Mathieu’s number is officially settled.
