SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners completed a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds with a 5-1 victory on Wednesday. Bryce Miller and the Mariners' bullpen held the Reds to just one hit in the game.
Miller, along with relievers Trent Thornton, Gabe Speier, and Austin Voth, combined to stifle the Reds' offense. Miller allowed only one hit, a solo home run to Elly De La Cruz, over six innings of work. He struck out seven batters and improved his record to 3-1 with an impressive 1.85 ERA.
Seattle's offense was powered by solo home runs from Cal Raleigh, Mitch Garver, and Josh Rojas. Garver's sixth-inning homer was his first with the Mariners and proved to be a key moment in the game.
Manager Scott Servais praised the team's pitching and defense, highlighting their recent clean play on the field. The Mariners have been winning close games thanks to their strong pitching performances.
Cincinnati's starter, Andrew Abbott, matched Miller through five innings but couldn't contain Seattle's hitters. The Reds struggled to generate offense against the Mariners' pitching staff.
Seattle's upcoming road trip will begin in Colorado, with right-hander Emerson Hancock set to start the opener. The Reds will return home to face the Los Angeles Angels, with their starting pitcher yet to be announced.
Despite the sweep, Reds manager David Bell remains optimistic about his team's performance, emphasizing that three games do not define their season. Both teams will look to bounce back in their upcoming series.
In injury news, the Reds continue to deal with illness as Christian Encarnacion-Strand was scratched from the lineup due to not feeling well. The Mariners reinstated utilityman Sam Haggerty from the injured list but subsequently optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma.
